We came up over the boardwalk just as the morning steam was lifting, and there it was. Grand Prismatic, they called it; but that name feels too small now that I’ve seen it. It was like the earth itself had opened an eye. Colors I did not know existed spread out in rings, bright and trembling. Blue like heaven must be, if heaven is real the way they say. Then green, then yellow, and then a burning orange that looked almost alive, like it might crawl right out of the water and set the whole place alight. Brother Jensen said it was caused by heat loving organisms. He said it in that careful, tidy way of his, like everything in the world can be explained if you line up the right words. I nodded. I always nod. But standing there, I felt something that no explanation could quiet. It was too beautiful. Too strange. Too bold. It did not apologize for itself. The others took photographs and laughed and pointed. Some of the girls said it looked like a rainbow melted into the ground. I stood back a little. I did not trust myself to speak. I kept thinking; if something like this can exist, something so wild and bright and not at all hidden then why must I be hidden? I should not write that. If Mother ever found this journal, she would be frightened for me. Maybe worse than frightened. But it is the truth. I watched the colors shift as the steam moved, and for a moment, I imagined stepping off the boardwalk and walking straight into it. Not to die, I don’t think, but to be changed. To come out the other side as something honest. Something that didn’t have to bow its head or measure every word or pray the right prayers just to feel clean again. I prayed last night. I asked Heavenly Father to take these thoughts from me. I asked Him to make me normal. Good. Worthy. But today, standing there, I wondered. What if He made me this way on purpose? What if I am not a mistake to be corrected, but something more like that spring. Too bright, too strange, too much for people to understand, so they build a path around it and tell you not to step off? I am afraid to think such things. And yet, I cannot seem to stop. When we left, I turned back one last time. The colors were still there, undiminished, as if they had always been and always would be, no matter who came to look or what they believed about it. I felt something then. Not peace, exactly. But something close enough that I wanted to hold onto it. Maybe someday I will understand what I saw today. Maybe someday I will understand myself. For now, I will keep this to these pages.
